Post 1/8: This is one of the early drawing of the armchair I did. Both the table and the armchair reflect my thoughts, ideas and observations over the time of confinement, when I worked and lived at home. Probably if I were to design it now having been back in the office since 5 weeks, it would look totally different.
Post 2/8: On a personal level these past weeks and months have definitely increased a sense of looking for the essence and origin of things. A sense of clarity emerged stronger (calling maybe for radicality). Rather than designing a chair, I wanted to create a seat that would fall in between a piece of furniture and the 4 walls it is in. Using only one shape, a curved surface, repeated horizontally and vertically to form a seat and a table.
Post 3/8: I researched spaces, which were designed for and by “self-sufficient” communities. Where living and work cohabit(ed) under the same roof: the Shakers, or not so long ago projects of a Benedictine monk: Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991). This is a bench he designed for the Abbey Church of St. Benedictusberg, Vaals in the Netherlands in 1967.
Post 4/8: Over the course of the past 6 weeks I worked in three different places: home, old office and new office. These images show the dining table which turned into my workspace. I only brought with me the minimum: pens, sketchbooks, a few books for my research and my scanner.
Post 5/8: This images shows the view form my old office. I liked it because it was a small theater, very “Rear Window-esque”. I guess I liked for that cinematographic aspect.
Post 6/8: Here’s a detail of the new office, where I moved beginning of July. I’m sharing the space with graphic designers.
Post 7/8: I chose cherry wood for its warmth and very specific colours on top of having a very distinct wood grain. Since both the armchair and the table are fairly simple designs, I wanted to contrast them with a timber that has a beautiful wood grain.
Post 8/8: During the time spent working and living from home I started drawing again. It’s something I haven’t done on this scale for a very long time. I have drawn endlessly. In retrospect I also I think it meant doing something very tangible. Something I guess we were looking for during the lockdown…
